Signs of a frozen pipe
- No water, or only a trickle, from a tap
- Frost on a visible pipe, or a pipe that feels extremely cold
- A toilet that will not refill
- Unusual noises, such as gurgling, from pipes
Pipes most at risk are in lofts, garages, outhouses, kitchens on outside walls and anywhere cold air can reach.
How to thaw a frozen pipe safely
- Turn off the water at the stopcock. See how to find your stopcock.
- Open the nearest tap so that water can escape as the ice melts and the pressure eases.
- Warm the pipe gradually. Start at the tap end and work back towards the frozen section. Use a hairdryer on a low setting, a hot water bottle or warm towels wrapped around the pipe.
- Keep the heat moving and be patient. It can take a while.
- Check for leaks as the ice thaws. A pipe may have split, and the water will only show once it is flowing again.
Do not use a blowtorch, open flame or boiling water on a frozen pipe. It can damage the pipe, start a fire or cause a burst. Keep electrical heaters and hairdryers away from water.
What if the pipe has burst?
If water starts to flow where it should not, turn off the water at the stopcock straight away, turn off the heating, and call a plumber. See our 24/7 emergency plumber service on 07377 869384.
How to prevent frozen pipes
- Insulate pipes and tanks in lofts, garages and outbuildings with lagging
- Keep the heating on low in very cold weather, especially when you are away
- Open internal doors and the loft hatch slightly to let warm air circulate
- Fix dripping taps, as even a slow drip can freeze
- Disconnect and drain outside hoses, and cover outside taps
- Know where your stopcock is, and check it works

Frequently asked questions
Will a frozen pipe always burst?
No, but it can. Ice expands and puts pressure on the pipe, and a split may only show once it thaws. Check carefully as it thaws.
Can I use boiling water to thaw a pipe?
No. Use a hairdryer on a low setting, a hot water bottle or warm towels instead. Boiling water can damage pipes.
How cold does it have to be for pipes to freeze?
It depends on the pipe, how well insulated it is and how long the cold lasts, but sustained temperatures below freezing put exposed pipes at risk.
Is it worth lagging pipes?
Yes. Lagging is inexpensive and one of the simplest ways to protect your pipes.
