1. It is more than 10 to 15 years old
Most boilers are designed to last roughly 10 to 15 years. As they age, they become less efficient and parts can become harder to find. If yours is getting on, it is worth thinking about replacing it before it fails in the middle of winter.
2. It keeps breaking down
One repair is normal. Repeated breakdowns, regular loss of pressure or ongoing call-outs are a sign it is not worth throwing more money at the old boiler.
3. Your energy bills keep rising
Older boilers can be far less efficient than modern condensing boilers. A new, efficient boiler can use less gas to give you the same heat, which can help lower your bills.
4. It is making strange noises
Banging, whistling, gurgling or “kettling” noises can be caused by limescale, sludge or a faulty part. Sometimes a repair or system clean will fix it, but if the boiler is old, it can be a sign it is struggling.
5. Slow or uneven heating and lukewarm hot water
Radiators that take a long time to warm up, cold spots, or hot water that runs lukewarm can be signs of a failing boiler or problems with the system. Sometimes a simple fix helps, but if problems continue, get it checked by an engineer.
6. Leaks or visible corrosion
Water dripping from the boiler, rust or corrosion on components, or a pressure that drops again and again can mean a failing part. If the leak is from a part such as the heat exchanger, replacing the boiler is often the sensible option.
7. A yellow or orange flame, or soot marks
A healthy gas flame burns steady and blue. A lazy yellow or orange flame, black marks or soot around the boiler, or symptoms like headaches, dizziness or nausea may point to carbon monoxide. Turn the appliance off, open windows, get fresh air and call the free National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999. Fit a carbon monoxide alarm and test it regularly.
Repair or replace?
As a rule of thumb, a repair makes sense when the boiler is fairly new and the fault is minor. Replacement makes more sense when the boiler is more than 10 to 15 years old, has had several repairs, or the repair would cost a large share of a new boiler. Ask for a clear quote on both so you can compare.
